Motivational Interviewing (MI) Training from a Member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT)

I offer several options for training in MI, no matter your level of knowledge or experience in the technique. Below I have outlined different trainings for individuals and groups, although please contact me if you are looking for other options for personal, group, or staff training in MI.

Individual feedback and skill development using the MITI

Description: Bill Miller, the co-founder of MI, is fond of saying that learning any technique such as MI is like learning how to play the piano. You can read about playing the piano, but without practice and feedback you won’t get very far. The same can be said with learning MI. Research has supported the notion that the best way to learn MI is through regular practice and feedback. “Practice” in this sense can be recorded sessions with bona-fide clients or friends and family members who role play (or “real play”) a situation in which you respond using MI. The recordings are then reviewed by an MI trained coder using the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI) tool.

The advent of the MITI (currently in its 4th edition) has greatly strengthened how trainers ensure integrity of the approach. The MITI allows for objective scoring on both the spirit and skills used in competent delivery of MI, including open/closed questions, reflective listening, MI-adherent (asking permission) and non-adherent (overly confrontational) components.

Receive quality feedback and coaching based on the MITI tool. To begin the process, simply secure permission and informed consent from your client (a form can be made available to you or you can use your own) and send a recording of your MI work (best if in digital format) to tflewisconsulting@gmail.com. I will then review a 20 minute segment of the session and use the MITI to score adherence to MI. You will receive written feedback, along with the scored MITI. Feedback will focus on strengths as well as areas for improvement.. A 30 minute phone consultation is available to supplement the written feedback.

Pricing for individual feedback and skill development using the MITI:

  • $80.00 for written feedback and MITI form only
  • $160.00 for written feedback, MITI form, and 30 minute phone consultation
  • $200 for written feedback and MITI form for 3 interviews only
  • $320.00 for written feedback and MITI form for 3 interviews with 30 minute phone consultation

To order individual feedback and skill development using the MITI, please contact me at 336-549-7694 or tflewisconsulting@gmail.com. Feel free to leave a message on voicemail if I cannot answer the call at the moment. I will get back with you asap and we can start the process!
